What is an AV integrator?

An AV integrator is a company that designs, supplies, installs, programs and supports audio visual systems as one accountable party, so a meeting room, lecture theatre or signage estate is handed over working rather than as a list of parts. The activity is called AV integration: engineering displays, cameras, microphones, DSP, control processors and the network they sit on into a single system with one point of responsibility.
From the floor. The quickest test of whether you are dealing with an integrator is to ask who you phone when the boardroom fails ten minutes before a client pitch. If the answer involves three suppliers and the network team, you bought boxes and a drawing, not a system. An integrator owns that call, and prices the surrounding engineering so that it rarely has to take it. (Mark Brooks, Commercial Director)
Integrator, reseller, consultant or IT MSP
| Role | What they do | What they do not do | Accountable for a working room? |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV integrator | Survey, design, supply, installation, control programming, commissioning, documentation, support | Independent adjudication of a multi-vendor tender | Yes |
| AV reseller | Sells and ships hardware at manufacturer pricing | Survey, design, installation, programming, commissioning | No |
| AV consultant | Independent design, specification, tender pack and bid evaluation | Supply, installation, warranty | No: designs, then an integrator delivers |
| IT managed service provider (MSP) | Runs the network, identity, endpoints and the Microsoft 365 or Zoom tenant | Room design, mounts, cabling, DSP, control programming | No: owns the network, not the room |
Most integrators buy at the same manufacturer pricing as a reseller and design in-house like a consultant; the difference is that they also carry the installation and support risk. The reseller versus integrator FAQ shows where the headline saving on boxes usually goes.
What a good AV integrator does
A buyer can hold every bidder to the same criteria:
- Surveys the site before quoting, so the price reflects ceiling voids, containment, power and acoustics rather than a floor plan.
- Names a design lead and a project lead at proposal stage and keeps them through handover.
- Holds manufacturer certifications on the platforms it specifies (Crestron, Cisco, Logitech, Poly, Q-SYS, Microsoft Teams Rooms), which is what unlocks warranty registration and engineering escalation.
- Holds ISO 27001 for the data that passes through shared rooms and ISO 9001 for repeatable delivery.
- Is an AVIXA member with CTS-certified engineers on the design side.
- Sits on a public-sector framework such as Crown Commercial Service when the buyer is public sector, which shortens procurement.
- Hands over documentation and an acceptance test (as-built drawings, user guides, a signed-off test) and backs them with a support SLA that defines response time on critical faults.
Where these responsibilities sit in a real project is set out on the consultation and design and AV installation pages; the how to choose an integrator FAQ turns the criteria into a scoring sheet.
Quick reference: one accountable party for design, supply, installation, programming, commissioning and support; reseller ships boxes, consultant designs without installing, IT MSP runs the network not the room; look for site survey before quote, named design and project leads, manufacturer certifications, ISO 27001 and 9001, AVIXA membership, documented handover and a support SLA.
