What certifications should a commercial AV integrator have?
Last updated:
A commercial AV integrator should hold ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as a baseline, plus AVIXA membership, CTS-certified engineers, manufacturer certifications matched to the platforms in scope, and Crown Commercial Service supplier status for public sector work. Each of these is verifiable, not a marketing claim.
The credentials fall into four groups:
| Group | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ISO standards | ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental) | 27001 covers the data flowing through shared meeting rooms; 9001 covers consistent project delivery; 14001 covers WEEE-compliant disposal at refresh |
| AV industry | AVIXA membership, CTS-certified engineers, CTS-D for designers, CTS-I for installers | AVIXA sets the AV industry standard; CTS is the only globally recognised AV professional certification |
| Manufacturer | Crestron Master, Cisco Premier Collaboration, Logitech Gold, Poly Platinum, Q-SYS Certified, Microsoft Teams Rooms certified partner | Required for warranty registration, firmware access, support escalation and access to the engineering roadmap |
| Public sector | Crown Commercial Service supplier status, relevant framework lots (RM6107, RM6118, G-Cloud), SafeContractor / SSIP | Pre-validated status that materially shortens the procurement cycle |
The manufacturer certifications matter more than buyers often realise. A Crestron Master integrator gets first-line support escalation; an uncertified Crestron reseller is at the back of the queue. The same applies to firmware roadmap access, warranty handling and discounted pricing that finds its way to the client.
For site safety on commercial premises, check SafeContractor or another SSIP-recognised body, plus current public liability cover (£10m is the bar for most City of London commercial sites). Cyber Essentials Plus is increasingly expected for any integrator touching networked AV.
Verify the credentials directly. ISO certificates are issued by named UKAS-accredited bodies and are individually checkable. AVIXA, CTS, manufacturer programmes and Crown Commercial Service all publish lookup directories. The published accreditations register shows certificate numbers and expiry dates so buyers can validate independently. For the procurement context, see the consultation and design service.
Quick reference: ISO 27001/9001/14001, AVIXA + CTS-certified engineers, manufacturer certifications matched to the platforms in scope, Crown Commercial Service supplier status, SafeContractor + £10m PL.
