Can you join a Zoom meeting from a Microsoft Teams Room?

Yes. A Microsoft Teams Room can join a Zoom meeting through Direct Guest Join, a built-in feature that opens the Zoom meeting's web client on the room console using the room's camera, microphones and speakers, and the same route works for Webex and Google Meet. It is a guest experience rather than a native one: the room sends and receives audio and video and can view shared content, but in-room content sharing, chat, recording and layout control are limited depending on the platform and the current client version. Organisations that need full parity on every platform use Cloud Video Interop or a SIP/H.323 gateway service instead.

MethodWhat worksWhat is limitedWho it suits
Direct Guest Join (built into Teams Rooms)One-touch join when the calendar invite contains a Zoom, Webex or Meet link; room camera, microphones and speakers; viewing shared contentIn-room content sharing, chat, recording, reactions and gallery layout vary by platform and client version; no Teams AI features; MTR on Android supports fewer third-party platforms than MTR on WindowsTeams-standardised estates that meet external parties on Zoom a few times a week
Cloud Video Interop (Pexip, Cisco, HP Poly) or a SIP/H.323 gatewayStandards-based dial-in with consistent layouts, enterprise call control and recording policy; works with legacy codecsA subscription per room or per port on top of the room licence; configuration on both platforms; dialling rather than one touchLarge enterprises, regulated firms and estates with existing Cisco or Poly codecs
BYOD laptop over USB-C or HDMIAny platform with the user's full feature set; room camera and microphones presented to the laptop over USBNot one touch; depends on the user's laptop and licence; no room telemetry for that callMixed-platform rooms and guest-heavy spaces, see BYOD vs native room

From the floor. Direct Guest Join fails on site for boring reasons, not product reasons. The Zoom link gets stripped from the invite by the resource mailbox, the proxy blocks the Zoom web domains, or the host's Zoom account only allows authenticated users. Test one real external invite in every room before handover, not a meeting you created yourself. (David Corker, Technical Sales Director)

What has to be enabled

  • Device setting. Direct Guest Join is switched on per room in the Teams Rooms settings or the Pro Management portal, with a separate toggle for Zoom, Webex and Google Meet. It does not need a Pro licence.
  • Calendar processing. The room's resource account must keep the invite body (DeleteComments off) and accept external meeting invites, or the console never sees the join link.
  • Zoom-side settings. The host's Zoom account must allow joining from the browser; "authenticated users only" or a waiting room will block or delay a guest join.
  • Network. The device needs outbound HTTPS to the Zoom, Webex or Meet web-client domains through the firewall or proxy.
  • Platform support. MTR on Windows supports Zoom, Webex and Google Meet; MTR on Android devices support a narrower set that varies by manufacturer and firmware, so confirm before specifying.

When to stop and rethink the platform

If a third of the room's meetings are on Zoom, a guest experience is the wrong design. Either run Zoom Rooms natively in that room (most certified bars switch platform in firmware), add a BYOD input, or revisit which platform owns the calendar. The Microsoft Teams Rooms page covers Windows and Android device choice; the wider video conferencing systems overview covers mixed estates.

Quick reference: yes, via Direct Guest Join (audio, video and viewing shared content; in-room sharing, chat and recording limited by platform and client version), or Cloud Video Interop / SIP gateway for full enterprise interop; enable it per device, keep the join link in the invite, allow web-client join on the Zoom side, test with a real external invite.
