How much does a bar or pub sound system installation cost?

A bar or pub sound system installation costs £1,500 to £4,000 per zone for background music, and a bar that also hosts DJs or live music needs a separate higher-output system for the main room, typically £5,000 to £15,000 on top. A typical pub runs 2 to 4 background zones (main bar, lounge or dining area, garden, WCs); a late-night bar adds the performance system and a DJ input.

From the floor. The number that decides a bar system is on the premises licence, not the spec sheet. If there is a noise condition requiring a limiter, the limiter is the first line on the drawing and the amplifiers are sized behind it; size the amplifiers first and the limiter spends every Saturday night cutting the system out. What drives the cost

  • Zone count. Each zone needs its own amplifier channel, speakers and DSP control. Background zones use ceiling or surface-mount speakers on 100V line; the main room runs low-impedance cabinets.
  • Performance system. DJs and live acts need full-range cabinets with real headroom, a subwoofer and a mixer or DJ input panel. Subwoofer placement matters: against a party wall or on a suspended timber floor the bass goes straight into the flats upstairs, so position and isolation are part of the design.
  • Limiter and noise conditions. Many premises licences carry a noise condition requiring a sound limiter set at a level agreed with environmental health. It sits between the DSP and the amplifiers and cannot be bypassed by staff.
  • Late-night leakage. Doors, windows and the smoking area leak more than the walls. A DSP schedule that mutes the garden zone when the outdoor area closes and tightens the bass after 11 pm is cheaper than acoustic doors.
  • DJ input and mixer. A lockable panel with XLR and line inputs, a mixer with a house preset staff can recall, and a microphone channel for quiz nights.

Licensing is separate: recorded music needs PRS for Music and PPL (TheMusicLicence), from £100 to £400 a year for a small site, more for venues with live music and late licences. Use a business streaming service, not a consumer account.

Pubs inside hotels and bars inside larger venues are covered on our hospitality AV hub; the audio systems page explains zoning, DSP and limiter design.

Quick reference: background music £1.5k-£4k per zone (2-4 zones); DJ or live-music main room typically £5k-£15k on top; limiter sized to any noise condition on the premises licence; subwoofer placement and late-night scheduling to control leakage; PRS for Music plus PPL £100-£400 a year for a small site.
